The Mistaken

About THe Mistaken

A great photographer friend, Ed Simmons suggested the following band might be fun to work with:

In the words of one Mistaken fan: ‘you aren’t writing about milkshakes…’

The Mistaken deal with lonely satellites, bunker-dwelling control-freaks, articulate terrorists and George Zapata, among others. Is it a thankless job? We think not.

The Mistaken were enlisted as back-up band for Drayfus Grayson on his ‘Go!’ CD, released 1998. We and Drayfus shared many a smokey dive together as ‘Three Guesses’, traversing the Westside underbelly of converted mortuaries and hen-houses masquerading as nightclubs.

The Mistaken have been associated with fellow conspirators The Brothers Dimm, and The Flower Machine. Mistaken members hail from Mount Washington, Lake Forest and Santa Ana, now known collectively as ‘Dreamland.’

Musical influences include Wilco, Squeeze, Ron Sexsmith, Beatles, et al. Then again, our record collections include albums by Crowded House, XTC, Esquivel, Annette, Gary Lewis and the Playboys, and Jerry Vale.

Should probably stop there.

Instrumentation
Chris Shulda: vocals, bass, guitar
Nick Santangelo: vocals, keyboards, guitar
Jose Sanchez: drums

Purusa Not From the USA?

June 15th, 2009

This journey began in 2001 when at 17 years old, Stuart and Callum formed the band. During this year they played small local shows and school concerts, gaining valuable experience. The duo quickly formed a fantastic musical understanding of one another and shared the same goals and ambitions. Through the years they wrote a full album that falls within the heavy rock/alternative genre. This has been developed through time and experience. Along the way they took on many band members, attempting to create the sound they were striving for. Through various reasons, mainly lack of drive and ambition from the other members, they parted ways with them, seeking the perfect line up. During this time however, there were many positives. A backlog of material was pieced together and valuable gigging and recording experience was gained through the previous line-ups.

September 2008 spawned the birth of the band Purusa. In this month Stuart and Callum found the perfect line up. This now included vocalist and lyricist, Emma. Her all round package of unique vocals, lyrical ability, ambition and aura made her the missing piece they searched to find. Emma has many years of singing experience, going right back to singing cover songs in school concerts (age 11). Her other experience mainly includes singing solo local shows and singing competitions, usually to backing tracks or a single guitar. However, Emma’s desire was always to be the front woman of a heavy rock band. She began her search for this band in 2007. Many bands were tried but unfortunately, none met her high standards… Until she met Purusa.

Purusa’s first endeavour was to write and produce a concept album that has been named ‘Intrinsic’ which is representational of the journey through life and is best described as gothic ambience. This album was created due to the fact that the band struggled to find a drummer that would meet their high standards of ambition, determination and musicianship. In April 2009, all members of the band quit their full time jobs to focus fully on recording their debut album. Due to the bands ambitions towards being successful they searched long and hard and found a session drummer called Tim Kitchen who naturally understood the vibe and intricacies of the songs.

Purusa have currently completed their first 3 track E.P. entitled ‘Anoxia’ which includes Emma’s vocals. They are currently working with a designer to complete artwork for the E.P. which best represents the music. In the meantime the songs are available to listen to on MySpace and Taxi.

Purusa have received excellent, positive feedback from the general public and Radio stations from America, Germany and the UK have shown enough interest to play the songs and promote them on their own pages. They have also been approached by a film director/writer to use one of their songs in a new feature length production, and producer Sylvia Massy has contacted them to discuss recording with her.

Purusa have a marketable image and all the drive and ambition required to ‘make it’ in the industry. They also have a fresh and completely unique sound. Uncommonly to other bands, Purusa’s main influence is its own music. The band constantly strives to build upon and improve in any way the music that they have written previously. They live for playing their own music and listen to their own creations more than those of any other bands.

Thank you very much for taking the time to read this bio,

Much love,

Purusa

Lemonheads Sue GM

June 6th, 2009

The frontman for the band The Lemonheads, Evan Dando, is sueing GM and their ad agency Asche & Spencer Music, Inc. Dando claims GM violated his copyrights by using the song “It’s a Shame About Ray” in a 2008 advertising campaign.

“The Lemonheads are an American alternative rock band, formed in 1986 by singer/guitarist Evan Dando, who has been the only constant member.

The Lemonheads’ popularity grew in 1992 with the album It’s a Shame about Ray which was produced, engineered, and mixed by The Robb Brothers (Bruce Robb, Dee, and Joe), followed by a cover of Simon and Garfunkel’s “Mrs. Robinson”, which eventually became one of the band’s most successful singles to date. ”

68% Of Households Play Video Games

June 4th, 2009

Sixty- Eight Percent of U.S Households Play Computer or Video Games

Los Angeles – Sixty-eight percent of American households play computer or video games, according to new research from the Entertainment Software Association (ESA), which represents U.S. computer and video game publishers. The number of households playing games increased three percent over 2008, illustrating the expanding use of entertainment software across all demographics. The ESA released these findings as part of its Essential Facts About the Computer and Video Game Industry 2009 report during the E3 Expo, the computer and video game industry’s annual trade show.

“This is the new golden age of entertainment software. Our products are now being enjoyed by over two-thirds of Americans,” said Michael D. Gallagher, CEO of the ESA. “As the findings of the 2009 Essential Facts illustrate, more and more Americans across all demographics are now embracing the interactive entertainment experience that computer and video games provide.”
Other findings of the survey include:

* Forty-two percent of American homes have a video game console;
* Adult gamers have been playing for 12 years on average, a decrease from 2008, an indication that more Americans are picking up video game controllers for the first time;
* The average game player is 35 years old;
* Seventy-seven percent of parents believe that the parental controls available in all recent video game consoles are useful;
* Almost half of all games sold (45 percent) are rated ‘E’ for Everyone by the Entertainment Software Rating Board; and,
* Forty-three percent of online game players are female.

In addition, the report includes statistics about the high level of parental involvement in video game play. Sixty-three percent of parents who have children under 18 with a gaming console in the home believe games are a positive part of their children’s lives. Those parents are present when games are purchased or rented 92 percent of the time and report always or sometimes monitoring the games their children play 91 percent of the time.

The research for Essential Facts About the Computer and Video Game Industry 2009 was conducted by Ipsos MediaCT and is the most in-depth and targeted survey of its kind, gathering data from almost 1,200 nationally representative households that have been identified as owning either or both a video game console or a personal computer used to run entertainment software.

Time Warner Announces Divorce From AOL

Time Warner Inc. Announces Plan to Separate AOL
May 28, 2009

NEW YORK – Time Warner Inc. (NYSE:TWX) today announced that its Board of Directors has authorized management to proceed with plans for the complete legal and structural separation of AOL from Time Warner. Following the proposed transaction, AOL would be an independent, publicly traded company.

Time Warner Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Jeff Bewkes said: “We believe that a separation will be the best outcome for both Time Warner and AOL. The separation will be another critical step in the reshaping of Time Warner that we started at the beginning of last year, enabling us to focus to an even greater degree on our core content businesses. The separation will also provide both companies with greater operational and strategic flexibility. We believe AOL will then have a better opportunity to achieve its full potential as a leading independent Internet company.”

After the proposed separation is complete, AOL will compete as a standalone company – focused on growing its Web brands and services, which currently reach more than 107 million domestic unique visitors a month, as well as its advertising business, which operates the leading online display network that reaches more than 91% of the domestic online audience. AOL will also continue to operate one of the largest Internet access subscription services in the U.S.

AOL Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Tim Armstrong said: “This will be a great opportunity for AOL, our employees and our partners. Becoming a standalone public company positions AOL to strengthen its core businesses, deliver new and innovative products and services, and enhance our strategic options. We play in a very competitive landscape and will be using our new status to retain and attract top talent. Although we have a tremendous amount of work to do, we have a global brand, a committed team of people, and a passion for the future of the Web.”

Today, Time Warner owns 95% of AOL, and Google holds the remaining 5%. As part of a prior arrangement, Time Warner expects to purchase Google’s 5% stake in AOL in the third quarter of 2009. After repurchasing this stake, Time Warner will own 100% of AOL. Accordingly, once the proposed separation is completed, Time Warner shareholders will own all of the outstanding interests in AOL.

The proposed transaction will be structured as tax-free to Time Warner stockholders. The transaction is contingent on the satisfaction of a number of conditions, including completion of the review process by the Securities and Exchange Commission of required filings under applicable securities regulations and the final approval of transaction terms by Time Warner’s Board of Directors. Time Warner aims to complete the proposed transaction around the end of the year.

RIAA Wants To Tax Radio Music

NAB URGES CONGRESS TO OPPOSE
RECORD LABEL BAILOUT

– 50 State Broadcaster Associations also express opposition –

WASHINGTON, DC — NAB President and CEO David Rehr urged lawmakers to oppose legislation introduced that would force America’s hometown radio stations to pay a new “performance fee” to the recording industry for music aired free on the radio. The legislation, introduced in the House, is supported by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). A measure opposing today’s Congressional action is expected to be introduced shortly.

“Local radio broadcasters consider this fee a ‘performance tax’ that will not only harm your local radio stations, but will threaten new artists trying to break into the business as well as your constituents who rely on local radio,” wrote Rehr. “Although the proponents of H.R. 848 claim this bill is about compensating artists, in actuality at least half of this fee will go directly into the pockets of the big record labels, funneling billions of dollars to companies based overseas.”

Three of the four largest record label conglomerates — Universal Music Group, Sony Music Entertainment, and EMI — are internationally-based.

“Although the big record labels have seen their revenues decline over the last decade, local radio broadcasters are not the reason the recording industry is losing money, and it should not be the industry to fix it,” wrote Rehr.

To read a version of Rehr’s letter to House lawmakers, click here.

State broadcast associations representing all 50 states, as well as Puerto Rico and the District of Columbia, also issued a resolution today expressing opposition to a performance tax.

On numerous occasions, both record label executives and artists have recognized the promotional value of free radio airplay. Such statements include:

“I love a strong radio hit. All of us. That’s what our job is, to have a radio hit. Without radio, we couldn’t do what we do, but the job is to have a radio hit that sounds unique, and like you.”

— Jewel, Grammy-nominated recording artist, ‘Nashville Star,’ July 2008

“Alright, let’s talk about the nuts and bolts. If you win ‘Nashville Star’, you have to get on 200 major market radio stations. You have to.”

— John Rich, Big and Rich, ‘Nashville Star,’ July 2008

“I have to thank… every DJ, every radio guy, every promotions guy, everybody who ever put up a poster for me and spread the word.”

— Alicia Keys, recording artist and Grammy winner, 2008 Grammy Awards, February 2008

“[R]adio remains the best way to get new music into the listeners’ lives.”

–Sony BMG Executive VP Butch Waugh as quoted in Radio & Records, January 11

“[R]adio is the conduit to the people, the voice of the format and the lifestyle’s soundtrack.

-Sony BMG Nashville VP of Marketing Tom Baldrica, as quoted in Radio & Records, January 11

“Obviously, radio is probably the most important thing for a new rock band coming out. If you don’t get yourself on the radio, then you won’t draw bodies at the clubs and you won’t sell records.”

— ‘Another Animal’ drummer Shannon Larkin, Drum Magazine, 2008

“Country radio, thank you so much for being our mouthpiece. You know what we do means nothing if it never gets played, and no one gets to hear it.”

— ‘Rascal Flatts,’ Vocal Group of the Year, Country Music Awards, 2007

“I can’t even believe that this is real… I want to thank country radio. I’ll never forget the chance you took on me.”

— Taylor Swift, Horizon Award (for best new artist), Country Music Awards, 2007

“I have yet to see the big reaction you want to see to a hit until it goes on the radio. I’m a big, big fan of radio.”

–Richard Palmese, Executive Vice President of Promotion, RCA, 2007

“Radio has proven itself time and time again to be the biggest vehicle to expose new music.”

— Ken Lane, Senior Vice President for Promotion, Island Def Jam Music Group, 2005

“It is clearly the number one way that we’re getting our music exposed. Nothing else affects retail sales the way terrestrial radio does.”

–Tom Biery, Senior Vice President for Promotion, Warner Bros. Records, 2005

“That’s the most important thing for a label, getting your records played.”

— Eddie Daye, recording artist, 2003

“Radio helped me a lot. That’s the audience. I can’t see them, but I know they’re there. I can’t reach out and touch them with my hand, but I know they’re there.”

— B.B. King, recording artist, 2002

“If a song’s not on the radio, it’ll never sell.”

— Mark Wright, Senior Vice President, MCA Records, 2001

“Air play is king. They play the record, it sells. If they don’t, it’s dead in the water.”

— Jim Mazza, President, Dreamcatcher Entertainment, 1999

“I am so grateful to radio. Their support has truly changed my life, and I hope they know how appreciative I am for that.”

— Jo Dee Messina, recording artist, 1999
